In Life During Wartime, Mr. S. created some characters and situations which affected me deeply. But I wonder if — creative though he is — he realizes that novels like LDW reach out and affect the world so deeply that not only do characters they’re written of come to life… but many living people begin to embody and surpass characters who, sketched in fictions, are vastly more astonishing in persons…
