Long ago, the metrics of value were liquid and responded to living context and human concern. In this sense they were ‘present’ — which is to say sensitively variable within unique contexts. As they ‘developed’ toward abstract representations, standardizations arose. These standards became (dead) authorities: absolutely capable of moving people, or worlds on their behalf — against the interests of living beings.
