I say the finches sound like an adding machine because they are the active makers of sound. The truth is closer to the inversion: old electrical adding machines with paper output sound a bit like some finches. Of course, many creatures will emulate machines… for example, those who invented them — and some, again the aforementioned, will even become them, in function, and to a degree, in thought.
