Memory as we understand it was probably developed in a context of a largely bipolar competition between the reasons and purposes of mothers, and the reasons and purposes of hunters. The former is concerned with empathy and emotion. The latter is concerned with utility and mastery. These memory-forms became ways of knowing, and these become cultures.
